Student support for postgraduate and MBA study

Financial support for students embarking on a postgraduate or MBA course at university or college is available from a number of organisations which are listed here.

You should also ask your university or college as they may have local scholarships available.

You can get much more detailed information on all aspects of student finance on the Higher Education and Research Opportunities in the UK (HERO) and Aimhigher websites.

Useful websites
  • The Times Higher Education Supplement also maintains a huge database of graduate research funds, but not online, unless you are a subscriber (free trial online subscription for short period).

  • Association of Medical Research Charities - general information and help about charities to support studies and work related to medical research, including postgraduate, clinical, project, travel and equipment grants.

  • Award search - a searchable database of scholarships, bursaries and awards, by various criteria and by institution, in the financial aid section of studentmoney, managed by UCAS and Hotcourses.

  • EGAS (Educational Grants Advisory Service) provide advice and guidance on finding and applying to charities and trusts, which might apply to you, contact the Provides some information online including information on charitable trusts.   • British Chevening Scholarships - grants for overseas students to study in the UK for postgraduate studies and research at UK Institutions for Higher Education.

  • Entente Cordiale scholarships - awarded to outstanding British and French post-graduates, doctoral or post-doctoral students - all subjects - to study or undertake research for one academic year on the other side of the Channel. Site includes FAQ, application form and discussion forum.

  • Erasmus Mundus - a new postgraduate study programme running from 2004 - 2008.

  • Financial planning for students taking the Common Professional Examination, Graduate Diploma in Law and the Legal Practice Course - includes information on the Law Society Bursary Scheme, Law Society Diversity Access Scheme, sponsorships, The Inderpal Rahal Memorial Trust (pdf format).

  • Financial Planning for those considering a career as a Solicitor or Barrister - general information on grants, bursaries, scholarships, loans and other options for intending solicitors and barristers.

  • Funding my further study - including sponsorship and employers, public funding bodies, institutional and university funding and alternative sources for specific areas, from Prospects.

  • Funding for Postgraduates in Scotland - under the Postgraduate Students’ Allowances Scheme (PSAS), some full-time vocational courses, mostly at diploma level are funded.

  • Laura Ashley Foundation - includes grants to individuals on vocational MA courses leading to employment - fashion, textile, art related subjects.

  • MBA Loan Scheme - provided by Association of MBAs and NatWest Bank.

  • Postgraduate education for disabled students - useful factsheet for disabled students on sources of funding.

  • Postgraduate study in the UK - good general guidance notes for international students from UKCOSA.

  • Postgraduate scholarships - range of scholarships available for studies in the UK, from the British Council site.

  • Prospects Web - a comprehensive guide to courses, research, studentships, applications and funding.

  • RDInfo - Health-related research funding and training information and opportunities, includes database, funding resources listed by closing date, news, links to other funding organisations, some of them subscription service only, from the Department of Health.

  • REGARD - ESRC (Economics and Social Research Council) UK - research and grants information.

  • Scholarship Search UK - search for scholarships for undergraduate scholarships and grants offered by academic institutions, commercial organisations and charitable trusts.

  • Training grants for legal aid solicitors - to meet the tuition fees of students on the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and grants to support the provision of training contracts for successful LPC students Tel: 020 7759 0491.

  • UK Research Councils, Funding Councils and other HE funding bodies - funding for students in Higher Education, including links to professional bodies, from the NISS site.

  • UKRO - advice and guidance on EU research and Higher Education.

  • UK 9/11 Scholarships Fund - for people who have lost a parent or guardian as a result of the terrorist attacks in the USA Sept. 11th 2001, including mature students. Covering full-time study leading to a degree at undergraduate or Master’s level (or equivalent in further education) in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, or at recognised higher education institutions with an exchange agreement with a partner institution in the UK.
