Access agreement help (Bursaries and scholarships)

Universities and colleges provide extra financial help to students in higher education in the form of bursaries, scholarships and other incentives.

The Higher Education Act 2004 allows universities to charge a maximum £3,000 per year in fees from 2006/07 and institutions wishing to charge more than the "standard fee rate" - £1,200 in 2006/07 - will have had to sign up to an access agreement with the Office For Fair Access (OFFA).

These agreements make sure that the university helps students so that they are not deterred from their chosen university because of the cost. This help includes offering students financial help on top of the standard student finance package.
