Benefits for students with low incomes

Most full-time higher education students are excluded from benefits such as Income Support and Housing Benefit, although part-time students and those in certain vulnerable groups may still be eligible.

If you already claim benefits and want to take a full-time course of higher education, you should ask your local Jobcentre Plus office how this may affect your benefits. You can find your local office here

Benefits that are available are geared towards;

  • lone parents
  • student couples with children (Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit - different rules apply for the other benefits)
  • disabled students
  • couples where one partner is not a full-time student
  • those studying part-time and on a low income

This help takes the form of:

  • Income support
  • Council Tax
  • Jobseeker's Allowance for part-time students
  • Incapacity benefit
  • Working tax credits and Child tax credits
  • Welsh Assembly Learning Grant

In addition, from September 2006, those new full-time students who are eligible for social security benefits will be awarded the Special Support Grant. This is a non-repayable grant of up to £2,700 a year. The Special Support Grant will not affect the amount of benefits you are entitled to receive.

Students who receive the Special Support Grant will not be eligible to get the new Maintenance Grant.
