Disabled Students' Allowances

Disabled Students' Allowances or DSAs are grants that are designed to help students meet the extra costs of studying they may face as a direct result of a disability or a specific learning difficulty.

DSAs are paid in addition to (and not instead of) the standard student finance package. DSAs are not means-assessed so do not depend on your household income and do not have to be repaid.

DSAs are available for full-time, part-time and postgraduate students.

Depending on your needs, extra support from the DSA could include:

  • specialist equipment you need for studying (eg. computer software)
  • a non-medical helpers' allowance which could provide help towards the additional costs of travelling to your institution and a general allowance
  • extra travel costs you have to pay because of your disability
  • other costs - for example, tapes or Braille paper
More detailed information on Disabled Students' Allowances can be found on the HERO website.
